I think most sailors feel wistful this time of year.  On Friday, my husband and I took the mast down and began preparations for winter haul out.  To wrap or not to wrap, that is the question.  Of course we lace the shrouds and stays to the mast using rope and take off anything that could snap off.  Some club members then put their masts in a bag or even wrap it in plastic before putting it on the mast rack.  I think the plastic cannot seal out water, but certainly will seal it in.  We don't wrap.

The boats will come out of the water in two weeks. At our club we still use a marine railway, rather than a travel lift.  This means all the members of the club must work together to get the boats out for the winter and launch them again in the spring.  I think this co-operative effort helps build the social fabric of the club.

Saturday, 1 October, was a glorious sailing day.  I accepted an invitation to go out on a Northern 37 for a day sail.  Lake Ontario was sparkling in the autumn sunshine and the wind was just right for a 3 hour tour.

I hope your fall preparations go well.
